Here's what people say about this course:

MaryAnn

This course goes way beyond seascapes. You'll learn skills and techniques that can be applied to any textile art, from a warm and knowledgeable teacher. The two classes I've taken from Izzy are the top of my favourites list!

Carol M

I took part in the course last year and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Izzy was so attentive to detail. The videos were comprehensive and very informative. There was so much to learn. I mastered lots of new techniques too. Wow! best online course I have taken part in by far. Thank you Izzy.

Agnes

Personally, I've always had a love/hate relationship with my sewing machine, but you've definitely opened a door for me that I did not dare enter before and I've been playing with the machine much more confidently since.

How I teach

My aim is for you to become friends with your sewing machine, and be able to use it with confidence to create your own original work.

Each lesson will help you learn and practice a different machine embroidery technique, so as well as creating unique art, you're building your repertoire of machine embroidery skills along the way.

There's close-up video of every step and detailed instructions to follow where needed, but I also encourage you to go your own way and make these seascapes your own - and I show you how.

What's included?

  • 70 videos - pause, rewind, speed up, slow down, watch again and again...
  • Comprehensive notes for every lesson
  • PDF handouts to save and print off
  • Private Facebook group for friendship and support
  • My full support via direct message, email and the Facebook group
  • Forever access to ALL course material as long as my courses are hosted here - I have no plans to move!

I have an interest in the mixed media element but I didn’t know where to start! This course introduced me to different textures: I adore the effect of adding sari silks, scrim, lace, and learning to transfer writing to fabric. I'm a visual learner so the videos were great.

Kate M

It was a dark and stormy night...
I do love free-motion embroidery and get carried away!

I was sailing in calm, safe waters and then, with your encouragement and support, I found my sea legs and I was off. The instruction was perfectly pitched for all levels and I learned so many new techniques and skills that I can transfer to other projects.

It's been a voyage of discovery.

Sue M

This has been an amazing experience. I've learned several new techniques, gained confidence in others, challenged myself to think outside of the box. Your comments are always constructive and kind and the fact students can see and encourage others is good too.

Definitely looking forward to doing another course with you!

Frequently asked questions

You’ve got questions. I've got answers!

How long do I have access to the course?

It's yours to keep. There is no end date.

Access would only end if I should ever need to move from this website - which I have NO plans to do!

When does it start?

As soon as you enrol!

It's up to you how to pace yourself as you follow the course. You may want to blitz through to finish, or work at a more leisurely pace. You may want to dip in and out, to suit whenever you have time available to immerse yourself in the process.

You can access any of the lessons any time you want, whenever it suits you, wherever you are in the world - for as long as I host courses here!

I'm nearly always on hand at the end of an email to help out if you get stuck.

How much machine embroidery experience do I need?

None!

The course is designed to be accessible for beginners, as well as those with more experience. It doesn't matter if you've never used your sewing machine for creative embroidery before, I'll show you how even easy machine stitching can create wonderful textured effects.

If you do have more experience, there's plenty to get stuck into. From the options I demonstrate, you can pick which techniques will stretch you, and develop and improve your machine embroidery skills. There's lots of scope to try something new, and add to your repertoire of creative techniques.

A comprehensive guide to free motion embroidery is included, and has been described by a previous participant as the best free motion tutorial they've ever had.

And I'm always on hand for help and support should you get stuck!

I only have a basic sewing machine - can I still do the course?

Yes! The essentials are straight stitch, and an open pattern other than zigzag. My favourite stitch is a basic utility stitch used for dressmaking and household sewing, not a fancy pants pattern. Most older machines will have something suitable.

Your machine should also be able to stitch free-motion - whether or not you can is a different matter but I can help!

It's very unlikely your machine won't be able to do free-motion embroidery - even if you've never tried it before. You will need to be able to cover or drop the feed teeth, and preferably have a free motion embroidery or darning or quilting foot to be able to stitch with ease. It's possible to buy a universal free-motion foot - please check your machine manufacturer's instruction manual or website.

If you really can't drop or cover the teeth, or haven't got a suitable foot, there are still ways we can try and make it work but it will be harder. You can try and work around it, but you will miss out on a large part of the course.

If you've never tried any free motion with your machine before, don't worry, I'll talk you through step-by-step. It's one of the most exciting things you can learn, so give it a go - you won't regret it!

How much time will I need?

I suggest taking an hour or so a day over the course of a week or two. But you may prefer, if your schedule permits, to get stuck in and work steadily through everything in a few longer sessions and really immerse yourself in the project! That's why after a week, you have access to ALL lessons so you can move on whenever you're ready

Some steps you'll have to leave for a few hours or overnight, so you definitely won't be able to do everything in one or even two days.

Depending on your previous experience, it may be that you finish your first simple seascape after a few days, but then spend longer on a second (or third!) to try some more advanced techniques.

It's really up to you and your existing skills how you pace yourself. The course is there for you whenever it suits you and your schedule; you can fit it around all your other commitments. And because you have indefinite access, what's the rush?!

What materials and equipment will I need?

  • A sewing machine. Make sure it's in good working order before you start - when was the last time you cleaned and oiled it? Start with a new needle: I use Schmetz 90/14 topstitch needles.

  • A free-motion embroidery foot or quilting foot, and the ability to lower or cover the feed teeth.

  • Plain, strong and sturdy cotton calico or canvas. By calico I mean strong, plain cotton cloth, not loosely woven cloth - that's what I would call muslin! It needs to be FIRM to take the volume of stitching we're going to do.

  • Paper-like embroidery stabiliser like Stitch'n'Tear

  • Fusible adhesive like Bondaweb

  • Recycled papers such as old book pages, leaflets - nothing too precious or glossy.

  • An old magazine or two

  • PVA glue or glue stick

  • A tiny amount of gesso or white household emulsion paint

  • A few paints such as watercolour

  • Acrylic matte medium or acrylic wax sealer NB this isn't furniture wax, it's fluid and dries to a soft sheen.

  • A couple of brushes and a jam jar.

  • Fabric scraps and strips including some scraps of organza (think “sky” colours). I love using sari silks for this workshop but use all sorts of different things. You don't need much of anything, so see what you already have in your stash. Old lace (even net curtains) is great for sea foam!

  • A few all-purpose machine threads

  • Machine embroidery threads including invisible thread

  • A few thicker threads and yarns

  • Other optional bits and pieces include a few rusty bits and pieces e.g. old nails, water soluble fabric, transfer foil and a few small sheets of handmade paper and/or thin card, tracing paper, compass, ruler.

Because people will be taking this course in all parts of the world, I can't advise on where to find materials: you need to find your local or online supplier.

I'm a big believer in using what you already have in your stash - not only is it more cost-effective, it'll give your work that personal touch. Most of my fabrics are recycled cottons, but I'm a sucker for buying sari silk ribbons! I buy my machine threads and machine needles from a trusted online haberdashery retailer and make sure I use a quality brand. Thicker threads are invariably second-hand yarns and oddments, with a few new stranded and perlé cottons.

For the paints, we can work with what you have already - even a child's watercolour paint set would be fine for this, or even watercolour pencils.

What do I do if I get stuck?

First, there's no such thing as a silly question! I'm here to help.

There's a chat box on every page in the course - ping me a message, and I'll reply as soon as I'm next online. You can also leave a comment (and even upload a photo) or email me

You can also ask your question in the private Facebook group - and others may be able to help you out or give you suggestions to try.

What if I'm unhappy with my purchase?

Once you've signed up, I'm not able to give refunds.

Please get in touch with me before you go ahead and purchase, if you want to ask me anything before you commit! I'm happy to answer any questions that I haven't already answered here.

If you do go ahead and sign up and you're really unhappy with the course, please email me - but I strongly encourage you to get in touch beforehand if you're not sure.

How do I get feedback?

There's lots of ways! If you want a private response, probably the best way is to email me. There’s an email link at the top of every page in the course, and a little envelope icon at the verrrrrry bottom of every page, too.

Or send me a private message using the chat function on every page. This will also ping me an email notification, and I'll respond as soon as I can. If I'm online and already in the course, I'll see it immediately.

If you're happy for others to see, you can leave a comment (with or without) a photo in any lesson. This can be really helpful for others, because if you have a question, chances are someone else has the same one!

However, if you don't want to do that in the course itself, but you're happy for everyone in the private Facebook group to see, then that’s the place to post something! I check for posts every day, but if I'm not around (depending on time zones!) someone else is sure to be, to offer support or advice. It's a closed group just for this course, and very supportive.

Why should you join?

Here's what previous participants want to tell you:

Ruth

Why join Celtic Seascapes? I've learnt so much, both technically and artistically, and enjoyed every moment of it. Like many others, I have a long way to go still, but that's just going to be a real pleasure. Thank you!

Carol B

I'd say to anyone thinking of joining they should definitely go for it, and they'll have brilliant fun whatever their previous experience or skill level. It's terrific value for money. They can be confident that with Izzy 's advice and video lesson format to follow, they'll produce textile pieces they never thought they could, and be delighted with the results.

Carol M

I thought the videos were so detailed and the explanations were brilliant. Izzy is an experienced tutor and it was suitable for all abilities.

Juliet M

I LOVED everything. The way you teach, the fact that the lessons were "do in your own time", you were available. The group is AWESOME. The content was informative.  I finally am not terrified of metallic thread, and my sewing machine and I are getting on better.

Sue T

I liked it all and I really enjoyed that we all followed the same process but all put our own stamp on our pieces so we ended up with an amazing variety of work.

Carol B

I had previously loved 'Swirls of Colour' but I think 'Celtic Seascapes' is even better!

Morag P

It’s perfect in every way 😍

Susan M

The course was so well structured and the lessons were well designed, very helpful and fun!

Need a little more time?

No problem: I'm keeping the doors open until the autumn. But don't leave it too long - once the course is closed, that's it for another year.

Why Celtic?

I first visited the far north of Scotland over thirty years ago – I even swam in the sea at Durness and I’ve only just warmed up again! These days I'm a more frequent visitor to Brittany - another "Celtic nation" - and have been delighted to discover many similarities with the far north.

Whether it's the purity of the air, the clarity of the light or the dramatic contrast of colour, Celtic coasts are always gloriously invigorating and inspiring - whatever the weather. There’s something about striding along an empty sandy beach, with the wind making your eyes stream and your hair whip into your eyes, the sand blasting your skin – it  makes you feel alive!

And I've always been fascinated by the intricacy of Celtic knotwork, as found throughout the Celtic world and illustrated manuscripts (the most famous of which is the Book of Kells). Constructing my own simple interlacings to fit a space is so very satisfying and mindful, and I'd love to share how you can learn how to do the same.

My hope is that, as well as being an in-depth machine embroidery and creative textile course, the experience of taking this course will stir your soul in the same way that Celtic coastlines stir mine. And as well as making a seascape to be proud of, you’ll feel you’ve had a refreshing and immersive experience – and made some good friends along the way.
