Create an acoustic stitch book

  • Course
  • 17 Lessons

Learn how to create your own "stitch book" of fabric pages for some mindful hand embroidery.

What's an acoustic stitch book?!

It's a book you stitch into - by hand, not machine.
Unplugged would be a good name, too!

It's a portable stitch project with no rules

The book format allows you to tuck your stitching into a bag for a moment of calm creativity wherever you go.

There are no rules for embroidering or embellishing the pages - that's up to you.

How does it work?

The book pages are made from a sandwich of fabrics and soft wadding, felt or flannel. You can add more scraps of fabric as and when you wish. What and how you stitch into it is up to you!

The book covers can be decorated with a colourful painted collage. These hard back covers help to keep the fabric pages flat, but also protects them while you're completing the embroidery, and also when the book is finished.

I'll show you how to deconstruct a bought sketchbook and decorate the cover (if you like - you can leave it plain). Then we'll create the fabric pages, and I'll show a way to make it easier to add or remove pages while your book is an embroidery work-in-progress.

Finally, I'll show you how to finish your book with a replacement or new spiral binding, for when your embroidered pages are completely finished.

What are people saying about the course?

I've done your Swirls course, which I loved - so had high expectations, which were met 😀

Jo

Fun to watch you collage. I kept thinking it was done but everything you added worked!

Great explanations and examples of every step

Frequently asked questions

You’ve got questions. I’ve got answers!

How long do I have access to the course?

Forever - or at least all the time my courses are hosted here at Podia.

How do I view the lessons?

Right here in this website!

When you sign up, you'll choose a password to access this website (unless you've already purchased a course from me here - just use the same log-in details if that's the case).

All the courses you've purchased from me here are listed under the same log-in. Just click "Products" then the name of the course you want to start, and away you go.

What will I need?

Short answer
You'll need a small sketchbook with a spiral binding, a hole punch, some soft flannel or felt, fabric scraps, embroidery threads and needles, a basic sewing machine (you only need straight stitch - nothing fancy), some bulldog or quilting clips, thin card, scalpel, ruler, cutting mat, pencil, bradawl or large needle - a knitting needle is ideal.

Longer answer
You may also want some collage papers, acrylic matt medium and paint, a brush, and - only if you have it already - a spiral binding gadget and new spiral wires, wire cutter.

There's a full list of requirements in the course, but I encourage you to use what you already have if possible.

What's an acoustic stitch book again?

It's a book of fabric pages that you stitch into by hand - i.e. without using a sewing machine. We'll use a sewing machine to create the pages, but then the pages are decorated with hand embroidery.

There's nothing to stop you adding machine embroidery, although it may be tricky to do straight onto the the pages as they'll be quite soft. It might be easier to do the machine embroidery first, using an appropriate stabiliser or hoop, and then construct the pages for binding into the book after you've completed them - the opposite way to using the book for hand embroidery, where we make the pages before the embroidery!

It's your book - I'm not going to tell you off if you do things differently! In fact, I love it when people take things in their own direction.

Will you give ideas for what to put in the acoustic stitch book?

Nope!

I'll share some pics of what I've done so far, but my book is by no means complete: it's definitely a work-in-progress. It's completely up to you how you use the book, including what fabrics you use, and what stitch you do on each page. This course is just to show you how to create the book.

How do I share my work?

There's a comments section in every lesson for feedback from me, and you can also message me directly from the chat box in the course.

You can tag me @izzymoore.art on Instagram so I can see and share what you create in my stories, and use the hashtag #acousticstitchbook so we can all see. You can also find me at @izzymooreart on Facebook - I'd love to see what you do!
