never tried it because you don't know where to start
avoid it like the plague
use it but grimace when you do
use it and hang on for dear life
feel a little (or a lot) out of control
hate the quality of line you get - it's all a bit ragged
snapping threads and snarl-ups and don't know why?
it's a bit meh, and never gets easier
think it's only for vermicelli-noodle stitch or sketching seedheads?
I created this course for you, to put an end to all your free-motion frustration once and for all!
It's a great course for absolute beginners, but if you'd like to sort out what you're doing because it's just not working how you'd like, then it's for you, too!
I wanted to create a comprehensive guide to free-motion, to help you build a strong foundation of skills. I have so many ideas that I'd like to share with you, and I'd also like to introduce more advanced techniques to enable you to really get stuck into the possibilities that free-motion opens up.
Most of all, I wanted it to be different to the usual machine embroidery courses out there, and move away from calico and hoops. They definitely have their place, and we will use them, but If you know my work you know I also LOVE to stitch on paper - and yes, it will feature!

Watch a sneak peek of what's included
My dream is for you to be confident and enjoy stitching free motion embroidery, because once you've nailed this, it's the best thing you can do with your sewing machine!
Free motion is all about stitching where YOU want the stitch to go, not where the machine is going (mostly a straight line!)
Master it, and you can express yourself in stitch however you want: literally write your thoughts on the fabric, with free motion embroidery!
All lessons are pre-recorded video with narration and full text lesson notes in English (sorry, no subtitles -yet - but this is something I’m actively working on).
Ten weeks of paced lessons, then forever access to all content.
The weeks of lessons are grouped into three blocks: Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced.
Each block is two weeks (total of 10 lessons per block).
5 lessons are released at the start of each week, on Monday morning. You choose the pace: do one a day, or save them all for the weekend.
Each lesson is a mini project to learn and practise a specific skill, but designed so you end with a finished mini work of art each time!
Every Thursday, I’ll send you some small weekend tasks. These may be things to find or do, prepare for the coming week, or maybe a mini project or side-quest!
A rest week between each block gives you time to catch up, and practise and consolidate new skills. I'll give you little prompts for these 'off' weeks, encouraging you to reflect on your progress and goals.
Live support and feedback via chat, email and Facebook group. Zoom calls for Q&A too, details tbc during the course.

I was so sad to reach the end. Obviously you have to have a life, but I could have carried on for a lot longer just doing these exercises. I think you can see that I really enjoyed the WHOLE bloomin' thing!
This class was truly amazing for me! I learned so much, my stitches are no longer jerky, they are mostly even, and I already have ideas of how I want to use them in my collage.
I am so much more knowledgeable and confident with my sewing machine. There are things I never would have tried and with the way you showed us it's so much easier and faster.
And that's another thing, I'm stitching faster than I had ever thought it would be possible for me to do! Thank you so much Izzy, You will definitely see me again!
A very well-structured course, carefully graded from the absolute basics through to more complex tasks and techniques. Also, it's packed full of creative and fun ideas!
Introduction
Available immediately on enrolment, to allow you to gather materials and get set up.
Weeks 1 and 2 (beginner)
A warm-up week first, to ensure a strong, confident start with the machine and to prepare our materials, then we'll start to tackle free-motion!
Week 3 is a chance to rest or practise
Weeks 4 and 5 (intermediate)
More mini-projects to build confidence and control, and learn loads of really useful techniques.
Week 6 is another chance to rest or practise, catch up if needs be, and develop personal projects.
Weeks 7 and 8 (advanced)
More advanced techniques to continue to develop accuracy and fluidity, and introduce an artistic touch
Week 9 is a final rest week to practise, consolidate skills, and maybe explore personal projects.
Week 10 to wrap up
Time for a final flourish with some extra fun lessons that sneaked in at the end, finish up and catch up if you need to, continue personal projects, and reflect back on progress.
Extras
I'll always give you a few extras too, not least the blooper reel!
For anyone who wants to learn free motion embroidery, this class is perfect for giving you the confidence through increasing your speed, continued daily practise, and just a nice steady increase in the skills needed for each project - to prepare us to carry on on our own! For me, it was a perfect set up for success!
I have already recommended your courses to three different friends of mine. One of my top reasons is they way you teach, you are right into the detail, you explain things really really well, you let us make our own choices, you are very supportive and helpful - and let's face it, your work is amazing!!
I really like your friendly style of teaching - it makes the course really enjoyable.
I love Izzy's courses: value for money, great content.
The aim is to become confident and competent using your sewing machine for free-motion embroidery. From simple stitch, to more advanced techniques with colour, texture and layers.
Say farewell to lumpy lines and crooked shapes, tangled threads and loopy loops!
You will:
make friends with your sewing machine. Become comfortable and familiar with the components and settings, know how to adjust it to do what you want, and become comfortable using it for mixed media textile art (yes, including stitching on paper).
learn to control the speed of the stitch smoothly and confidently. Learn to stitch faster than you may be used to, as well as very slowly and carefully.
learn to control the direction of the stitch to create fluid, smooth lines, that are exactly where you want them to be. Yes, we'll be eventually be writing and drawing with the machine, and more besides!
learn to control the size of the stitch to develop accuracy and detail, as well as creating wonderful watery effects and delicious texture.
learn how to create even more texture with free-motion embroidery by tweaking a few settings (safely!) and exploring what happens with different fabrics and threads.

You’ve got questions. I’ve got answers.
22 September.
Not much! I'm sure you'll have everything you need already:
Sewing machine that allows you to drop or cover the teeth
Free-motion embroidery foot - this is ESSENTIAL - please don't try this without
A handful of easy-to-find materials, fabrics and threads including calico, papery/tearable stabiliser and fusible adhesive. You don't need fancy art things or a huge stash (be honest, you have enough already).
Here's a simplified list of materials for you. There's a more thorough list and explanation within the course, which will be available to you immediately upon enrolment.
Absolutely not! In fact, I use an 80 year old Singer with just one stitch, not even a zigzag, for a lot of the lessons (and yes, I can drop the teeth).
There’s ten weeks from the day the lessons are released on the start date, until the very last block of lessons are released, including ‘extras’. This includes three rest-and-catch-up weeks spaced equally during the course, to keep you from feeling rushed or overwhelmed.
There is no official ‘end’ date for the course, because you have forever access!* It doesn’t matter if you can’t complete the course according to my timetable: I want you to be able to complete the course in your own time, no matter how long that takes.
After the ten weeks, I’ll still be available for support and assistance. I may take a tiny bit longer to get back to you if I’m not at my desk, but otherwise, nothing changes!
*forever access means for the foreseeable future. If I do ever decide to quit, you’ll get a minimum of a whole year’s access to any course purchased.
Lessons are released weekly and in three main blocks: Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced.
There are two weeks of lessons for each block (i.e. two weeks of Beginner, two Intermediate, two Advanced) with a rest week in-between each block before the next level starts.
Each week has five ideas to explore, and a couple of easy homework tasks to prepare for the next week. It's all designed to gently and gradually build your skills and confidence and your repertoire of surface decoration techniques. It's up to you whether to do one lesson a day, or save them for the weekend.
I'll give you starting points for simple design ideas but strongly encourage you to investigate your own favourite themes and motifs so your work is personal to you.
I'll also encourage you to start thinking about how to apply what you're learning to develop your own ideas.
There's a rest week after each two-week block (or ‘level’) to allow you time to practise and consolidate your skills, with some time at the end for you to start thinking about how to apply the techniques learned to your own ideas.
You also have forever access, so even after the course has 'finished' you'll be able to dip back in and continue in your own time.
Yes - right here! - not on Facebook 😊
It's important to have a sense of community and companionship when you embark upon something new. The in-built discussion space allows us to get to know each other a little more, as well as providing a private place to share our work - for fun and/or feedback.
As the course progresses, I'll schedule some Q&A calls via Zoom.
These are not compulsory to attend, won't be every week - or even related to specific weeks or tasks! So there's no pressure to 'keep up'. They're just an opportunity to meet each other and chat through what you're learning and how it's going.
I'll try and arrange different times to suit, but it doesn't matter if you're in a different time zone or can't make the call: you can always send in your question and I'll answer it!
You can email me questions ahead of time, and the recording will be uploaded for you to watch later - so even if you can't make any of the live sessions, you won't miss out on the support or community.
The next round of Fabulous Free Motion starts in the spring of 2026.

If you're really unhappy, or 'life' happens to you in a big way after enrolment and you are unable to continue, please get in touch and I might be able to work something out. I can't promise: I make any decisions like this on a case-by-case basis according to the particular circumstances.
